Registration for the large citizen science-project iSPEX, “Measure aerosols with your smartphone” is opened. As of today, people interested in ordering an iSPEX, the add-on for your smartphone which allows ‘do-it-yourself’ science, can do so. Everyone with an iSPEX add-on can join the national measurement day, which is planned in the early summer of 2013.

The iSPEX add-on together with the app changes a smartphone instantly into a scientific instrument to measure dust particles in our atmosphere. Participants of the project point their smartphone with iSPEX to a patch of clear sky, and take a picture. The measurements, and those of 10.000 other people within the Netherlands, will centrally be processed into an aerosol-map of the Netherlands. This allows the large public to participate in atmospheric research. For example, the measurement data can contribute to determining the health effects of aerosols. This is the first time that participants of a citizen sciensce project take measurements themselves on this large scale. The aim of this experiment is to determine the accuracy of this massive measurement campaign, and to determine how this can be used within a larger scientific context.
